In 2004, the state reclaimed its title of “ America’s Safest State,” a ranking previously held for seven out of eleven years.
Bismarck was ranked as a “Five Star Community” by Expansion Management in its annual Quality of Life Quotient rankings. Bismarck was also ranked as #1 for “Peace of Mind,” which looks at FBI violent crime statistics, FBI property crime statistics, and population density.
Housing
Something that newcomers will appreciate about Bismarck is the affordable housing they find, which is much lower than the average nationally.
In 2004, there were 333 single-family homes for sale, with 183 of these listing a price of less than $150,000; 69 between $150,000 and $200,000; 54 between $200,001 and $300,000; and 27 with a price exceeding $300,001.
If you aren’t in the market for a house just yet, Bismarck also offers many apartment complexes, condos, duplexes, and well kept trailer courts for you to choose from. With a range of prices for every income, you will be sure to find your perfect home here.
Health
Bismarck provides state-of-the-art medical facilities that accommodate for every need from a small child’s illness to high technology laser surgery. There are two medical centers within Bismarck, Medcenter One Health Systems and St. Alexius Medical Center, as well as a community hospital, which provide 524 beds. There are also many clinics that range from small specialty to large, multi-family. These facilities allow your family to receive the very best in medical care. Medcenter One and St. Alexius have made a joint effort and formed The Bismarck Cancer Center, which combines a team of highly skilled medical professionals to offer radiation therapy for cancer patients referred for treatment.
North Dakota is ranked No. 1 for the number of community hospitals per 100,000 populations and is also ranked 47th in the average cost for a community hospital stay per patient. The state also has one of the highest percentages of board-certified physicians, and ranks third highest in the nation for the number of nurses per 100,000 people. North Dakota is ranked 12th on the Healthiest State list from the Morgan Quitno Press in 2004. This ranking is based on such things as access to healthcare providers, affordability of health care, and a generally healthy population.
